DEADWOOD — The Yankton Press & Dakotan won several awards in the South Dakota Newspaper Association’s (SDNA) Better Newspapers Contest, the results of which were announced (in April) at the SDNA state convention in Deadwood.
City editor Nathan Johnson won first place for Best General Interest Columns, while regional editor Randy Dockendorf won second place for Best Sports Reporting and third place for Best Headline Writing. Editor Kelly Hertz took second place for Best Editorial Writing.
Also, the Press & Dakotan finished second in the General Excellence category (Dailies under 14,000) and third place for Best Newspaper Website (all daily newspapers). Gary Wood is publisher of the P&D, and Beth Rye is the new media director.
Also locally, the Yankton County Observer won five awards, the Freeman Courier won General Excellence and the Sweepstakes Award for Weeklies 1,151-2,050, and the Parkston Advance won general Excellence for Weeklies Under 1,150.
