The Wood River Journal (, Hailey, ID, came in second for newspaper websites in all of Idaho.

The honor was presented at the Idaho Press Club’s (IPC) Best of 2005 awards ceremony in Boise on May 6, 2006. In the Web site General Excellence category, dailies, weeklies and magazines were judged together.

Judging was based on quality of the site as a whole, including content, design, ease of use, navigation and “value added” items.

According to its web site at, the IPC has over 200 members and “serves as a unified voice for Idaho’s media professionals.”

The Wood River Journal is part of Lee Enterprises. They are a weekly that publishes on Wednesdays and enjoys a circulation of 15,000. They went live with in May 2005.

As though anticipating the success of, publisher Stephen Hartgen wrote to sales representavive Linda Rowlee in March 2005 that, “we think this has lots of potential and we hope you’ll help us make the new and improved WRJ site the best new ‘success story’ to come in!”

The Wood River Journal doesn’t publish all of their stories from the print edition to their online publication, but do regularly update it. The site is very interactive, incorporating a guestbook, simple blog for reader comments and a variety of online forms for user feedback.
